Tips for decorating a mantel with a TV above it.
Sometimes there’s just no getting around it and the best place to hang your TV is above the fireplace. I know it’s not everyone’s first choice for TV placement, but it’s still possible to have a beautifully decorated mantel even if your TV is the focal point.
The key is to keep it simple.
You don’t want to overcrowd your mantel with accessories and make it distracting to watch TV.
Here are a few ideas to try…
Idea #1: Add a simple accessory or group of accessories under the TV that’s long and low.
Keep in mind groupings in odd numbers work best, so try displaying a group of 1, 3, or 5 objects together.sourcesource
Idea #2: Add symmetrical accessories to either side.
If you’re someone who craves symmetry, try flanking your TV with a pair of accessories like lanterns, vases or candlesticks. sourcesource
Idea #3: Add asymmetrical accessories to either side
My favorite way to decorate a mantel, whether it has a TV or not, is by placing accessories asymmetrically on either side. The key to making this work, however, is to make sure your accessories are balanced both in visual weight and size.sourcesourcesource
Idea #4: Let your bookcases do the showing-off.
If you’ve got bookcases or built-ins flanking your fireplace, I’d suggest keeping your mantel space free of accessories and let the shelves showcase your pretties.
Idea #5: Frame the TV.
If you add a thick frame to your TV, it would look more like a piece of artwork and less like a big obtrusive TV over your mantel. You could try adding a few simple accessories to the mantel or leave it bare with this look.source
Idea #6: Play up the hearth and leave the mantel bare.
Instead of accessorizing your mantel, let the TV stand alone above and accessorize the hearth below to give visual balance to your whole fireplace.
